No. 8 Terps Fall To No. 20 Wolverines, 12-11, In Big Ten Opener

Box Score ANN ARBOR, MI – No. 8 Maryland men's lacrosse was defeated by No. 20 Michigan, 12-11, in its Big Ten season opener at U-M Lacrosse Stadium on Saturday.

 Michigan's Justin Tiernan scored the go-ahead goal with 1:13 remaining in the fourth quarter. He finished with a game-high five goals. 

Maryland (5-3, 0-1 B1G) trailed by two goals early in the second quarter but rallied for four unanswered scores to take its first lead of the game. A back-and-forth ensued with six ties but Michigan (6-3, 1-0 B1G) took back the lead in the third quarter and late in the fourth. 

  Daniel Maltz finished with three goals to capture his third hat trick of the season. Braden Erksa was the other Terp to finish with multiple goals. He scored two goals and added an assist.  
  The Terps finished with eight goal scorers and each of the first six goals was scored by a different player. Jack Koras (one goal and one assist) and Eric Malever (one goal and two assists) were the other multi-goal scorers. 
  Goalie Logan McNaney saved 11 shots and is closing in on becoming one of four Terps to notch 500 in a career. Ajax Zappitello caused two turnovers to reinforce a strong defensive effort.  

Luke Wierman won 11 faceoffs and picked up seven groundballs. 


Breaking Down The Action
  • Michigan led 2-1 after the end of the first quarter. Maryland scored a man-up goal from Daniel Maltz on a feed from Jack Koras with one minute remaining.  
  • The Wolverines scored first in the second period, but the Terps rallied for four unanswered goals by Eric Spanos, Eric Malever, Braden Erksa and Owen Murphy to take a 5-3 lead. Elijah Stobaugh assisted on the goal by Erksa to give Maryland its first lead of the game. 
  • Michigan responded with two goals in the remaining 4:20 and Koras scored with 32 seconds remaining to give the Terps a 6-5 lead at halftime. Each of the first six goals for the Terps was scored by a different player.   
  • The Wolverines scored three goals to the Terps' one in the third quarter. They took the lead at 8-7 entering the fourth quarter as a result. Erksa notched his second goal of the game. 
  • The fourth quarter was littered with back-and-forth scoring. Ryan Siracusa gave the Terps the lead with 3:47 remaining, but Michigan's goal with a minute to go sealed the win. 
Hat Trick Terps 
  • Daniel Maltz posted a hat trick with three goals on Saturday. It was the 18th hat trick of his career and the third of the season. 
  • Maryland has recorded a hat trick in 78 of its last 81 games dating to Feb. 2, 2019. This includes a remarkable streak of 67 straight games with a hat trick through the late 2023 season. 
  • The other hat tricks this season have come from Braden Erksa (three), Jack Koras, Eric Spanos and Eric Malever.
Multi Terps Update
  • Daniel Kelly (three goals) had his 15th multi-point game of his career and 10th game with multiple goals. 
  • Braden Erksa (two goals and one assist) had his 19th multi-point game in his two years as a Terp. It was his 13th career game with multiple goals. 
  • Eric Malever (one goal and two assists) had the 23rd multi-point game and 15th with multiple assists. 
  • Jack Koras (one goal and one assist) recorded his 18th multi-point game of his career. 
Pole Goal!
  • AJ Larkin continued the tradition of long pole goals and tallied the third long pole goal of the season in the fourth quarter. 
  • Ajax Zappitello scored the first long pole goal of the season for Maryland in the season opener. Colin Burlace secured the second and his first career goal in Maryland's win against Loyola. 
  • In 2023, the Terps had seven pole goals. In 2022, the team had 10. 
Terps In The Record Books
  • Luke Wierman became the program's all-time faceoff winner in the Terps' season opener. With 11 wins today, he added to his total of 742 for his career. 
  • Wierman is one of only three Terps in history to scoop up 300 or more groundballs in a career. He picked up seven and has 402 in his career. Wierman is chasing Andy Claxton (1989-92) who stands alone with 451 career groundballs.
  • Logan McNaney is fourth on the all-time saves list. With 11 in the game, he now has 493 for his career. He's just seven saves away from becoming the fourth Terp ever to reach 500 career saves. Niko Amato (2011-14) is third on the list with 625 saves in his career. 
  • Daniel Maltz scored three goals to increase his career total to 108. He sits at No. 14 on the all-time list after passing Dave Dempsey (1970-74). He's just two away from passing Mark Douglas (1988-91).  
  • Maltz moved to No. 29 in career points with 142 after passing Brendan Hanley (1985-88). Next up at No. 28 is Kyle Long, who had 149 points from 2019-23. 
  • Ajax Zappitello is 13th on the all-time caused turnovers list with one on Saturday, giving him 62 in his career. He's just one away from passing Bryn Holmes (2007-10).

  • 1: Elijah Stobaugh recorded his first point of his career with an assist in the second quarter. 
  • 1: AJ Larkin scored his first career goal in the fourth quarter. 
  • 7: Maryland has scored 10 or more goals in seven of eight games this season.
