Terps Drop 9-6 Decision To No. 22 Nittany Lions

Box Score STATE COLLEGE, PA – Maryland softball was defeated by No. 22 Penn State, 9-6, in game two of its series at Nittany Lion Softball Park on Saturday. 
  Diamond Williams got the Terps (16-16, 3-2 B1G) on the board first with her two-run homer in the top of the first. It was her team-leading 11th home run of the season. She is tied for sixth on the Maryland single-season leaderboard. Jaeda McFarland followed with a three-run shot in the second inning, her third of the season, to increase the lead to 5-0.  
  The Nittany Lions (28-7, 4-1 B1G) responded with seven unanswered runs, including five in the third inning, to secure the win. Courtney Wyche entered the circle late and provided a solid performance, but the Terps couldn't close the gap. Maryland took game one of the series in extra innings on the heels of Wyche's 19 strikeouts, a 2024 NCAA season-high. 

Maryland scored one run the remainder of the game on a single by Mazie MacFarlane. She went 2-for-3 in the ballgame. 

  Bri Godfrey started in the circle, pitched 2.2 innings and struck out one batter. Julia Shearer went 1.2 innings and Wyche pitched the remaining two innings. 
 
Breaking Down The Action
  • Diamond Williams hit a two-run home run over the left field wall in the top of the first to take an early 2-0 lead. Bri Grodrey then pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half. 
  • Jaeda McFarland launched a three-run home run to right field in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead. 
  • Penn State got on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning but trailed 5-1. 
  • The Nittany Lions added five runs in the third inning with an RBI single and two two-run home runs. They took the lead 6-5.
  • Penn State scored another run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth to lead 7-5.
  • Mazie MacFarlane singled up the middle to score a run in the fifth inning. The Terps closed the gap and trailed 7-6. 
  • Courtney Wyche entered the game in the fifth, but Gaby Garcia hit a solo home run to reclaim Penn State's two-run lead. 
  • The Nittany Lions scored again in the sixth with an RBI single. They needed just three outs to secure a 9-6 win. 
Terps In The Record Books
  • Diamond Williams has 11 home runs on the season and is tied for sixth on the single season Maryland leaderboard with Lindsey Schmeiser (2015) and Lindsey Ubrun (2006). 
  • Megan Mikami broke the school's stolen bases record against Virginia on March 12. She added to her career total by stealing one base and giving her 73 in her four seasons.
  • Courtney Wyche struck out two batters in the game to increase her career total to 544, which is fourth all-time. She passed Amanda Bettker (1999-2002). She's just three strikeouts away from passing Amanda Bettker (1999-2002). 
  • Wyche is also sixth on the all-time innings pitched list with 543.2 in her career. Next on the list is Kaitlyn Schmeiser (2012-15) who pitched 578.2 innings.
