Men's Tennis Hosts No. 25 North Carolina In Regular Season Finale

* The Maryland men's tennis team welcomes No. 20-ranked North Carolina into town Saturday for an 11 a.m. match at the Tennis Center at College Park. Saturday marks the final match of the regular season for the Terps who will compete in the ACC Championships in Raleigh, N.C. next weekend.

* The Terps enter the weekend 7-8 overall and are looking for their second conference victory of the season against the Tar Heels. In its most recent match, Maryland lost to Virginia, 4-3, on Tuesday in College Park.

* Saturday marks the 16th and final regular season match. Entering the weekend, the Terps are 6-5 at the friendly confines of the Tennis Center at College Park this season.

* The 7-0 win over Coppin State earlier this season gave Coach Laitta's squad six wins for the first time since 1998. Last season, the Terps notched four victories overall.

* Sunday's win over NC State gave Maryland seven victories for the season, securing the most wins for the program in a season since 1992 when it went 11-10.

A LOOK AT NORTH CAROLINA

* The Tar Heels travel to College Park coming off a 4-3 loss to ACC-leading Duke on Wednesday in Durham.

* Carolina is 14-5 overall this season. They enter this weekend with a 5-1 record in ACC play this season. Last season, the Tar Heels defeated Maryland, 7-0, in Chapel Hill. Carolina leads the all time series 48-8.

* The Heels are led by Marcio Petrone who is 21-6 overall this season with a 7-2 record in the ACC. Currently, Petrone is ranked 53rd in the nation in the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings in singles competition. Daniel Pinchbeck is 17-4 on the year with a perfect 6-0 mark in the ACC.

* On the doubles end, Petrone and Greg Archer form Carolina's top doubles team. The two are ranked 51st nationally with a 12-7 record on the season.

RACKING UP THE WINS

* Freshmen Haris Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) and David Reichsfeld (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) enter the weekend with ten wins a piece to lead the team in victories in singles play this season. Causevic is 10-5 for the season at the No. 1 singles position with a 2-5 record in the ACC. Reichsfeld posts a 10-5 mark with a 3-4 record in conference play.

* Reichsfeld and freshman Troy Demers (Annapolis, Md.) lead Maryland with nine victories in doubles competition this season.

* Causevic and senior Jon Murchison (Orchard Park, N.Y.) own eight victories at the top doubles spot and enter the weekend ranked 50th nationally.

* Maryland's three doubles teams have combined to win four matches in the ACC this season.

LAST TIME OUT

* The Terps tried to put their big victory on Sunday behind them when Coach Laitta's squad played host to Virginia Tuesday afternoon at the Tennis Center at College Park. Maryland fought hard but came up short this time, falling to the Cavaliers, 4-3, in a match that lasted nearly six hours.

* Causevic and Reichsfeld picked up their second and third singles victories respectively against the Cavaliers. Demers notched his first win in the ACC, beating Jay Curtis of Virginia, 7-6, 6-7 (7), 10-6.

CAUSEVIC CLAIMS ACC TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR

* Causevic was honored as the men's tennis ACC player of the week on Wednesday after the freshman helped lead Maryland to a 4-3 upset victory over NC State last Sunday.

* The freshman beat Matt Lucas of the Wolfpack, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) at the No. 1 singles spot. In doubles, he teamed up with Murchison to defeat Lucas and RJ Murray, 9-8 (5).

TENNIS AWARDED PRESIDENT'S CUP

* The men's tennis team will be awarded the sixth annual President's Cup, recognizing the team with the highest cumulative GPA over the past two semesters, in a reception this Sunday at the Inn and Conference Center on campus.

* The President's Cup award ceremony began in 1997 in an effort to recognize student-athletes who excel in academics and community service.
