Men's Tennis Looks For Second ACC Win Against Virginia

April 8, 2002

* After an emotional win Sunday over NC State, the Terps turn their focus to Virginia who comes to College Park Tuesday for a 2:30 p.m. match at the Tennis Center At College Park.

* The Terps enter Tuesday's match 7-7 overall and 1-5 in the ACC, riding high after defeating NC State on Sunday to earn the program's first ACC win since 1992. The Terps have been without the aid of scholarships for the past 12 seasons. Sunday marked the second conference win during that span.

* Tuesday marks the 15th match of the season and the 11th of 12 home battles this spring. Entering the weekend, the Terps are 6-4 at the friendly confines of the Tennis Center At College Park this season.

* The 7-0 win over Coppin State earlier this season gave Coach Laitta's squad six wins for the first time since 1998. Last season, the Terps notched four victories overall.

* Sunday's win over NC State gave Maryland seven victories for the season, securing the most wins for the program in a season since 1992 when it went 11-10.

A LOOK AT UVA

* The Cavaliers travel to College Park to face the Terps at 2:30 on Tuesday in what should be a tight battle.

* Like Maryland, Virginia finds itself around the .500 mark with a 10-9 record coming into Tuesday's match. Like Maryland, the Cavaliers are coming off a 4-3 victory over NC State in their last match. Like Maryland, the victory over the Wolfpack gave Virginia its first ACC win of the season.

* Virginia is lead by Stephen Nolen and Jason Romesburg each of whom have posted 18 wins this season to lead the team in victories. Nolen is 18-15 with an 9-9 mark in dual matches this season. Romesburg is 18-13 for the year with an 11-7 record in dual competition.

* Last season, Maryland fell to the Cavaliers, 7-0, in Charlottesville.

MARYLAND RETURNS TO WINNING WAYS

* The men's tennis team's 4-3 victory Sunday was a culmination of a season that has seen the Terps battle hard against heavily favored opponents but fall just short at the end. What makes it remarkable is the fact that Maryland is the only team in the ACC, a conference recognized as one of the best in the nation, that competes without the aid of scholarship players on its roster.

* Following the match, an emotional Coach Laitta said, "This is our national championship. No one ever thought we could win. I'm so happy for these guys. No team has maximized their performance with their talent as much as we have. I have won a national championship and have coached All-Americans in my career, but this is the biggest win and the biggest thrill in my career."

* The No. 1 doubles team of freshman Haris Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) and Jon Murchison (Orchard Park, N.Y.) won their eighth match of the season together on Sunday. In the latest Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings, the pair ranks 50th nationally.

* Causevic and freshman David Reichsfeld (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) lead the team in singles victories with nine this season.

* On the doubles end, the freshman tandem of Reichsfeld and Troy Demers (Annapolis, Md.) are tied with Causevic and Murchison with a team-high eight wins in competition this year.
