Herman Veal was voted the Best Defensive Player on the team last year and twice has won the Competitive Spirit and Most Unselfish Contribution for the Terrapins. He played in 26 games last year and started 1 9 after starting 17 of 29 as a sophomore. He is one of the most improved players on the team after setting out the 197980 season with a broken foot. He had his career high of 20 points against Ohio University as a sophomore with six of nine field goals and eight for eight on free throws. He also had 1 1 rebounds in the game although his career high rebounding is 15 against Long Island and Maryland Eastern Shore. He had 14 rebounds against Duke last winter. He was the leading rebounder for the Terps as a sophomore with 213 while scoring 271 points. As a junior he pulled in 1 79 rebounds and scored 1 76 points. He is an excellent free throw shooter hitting 1 76 of 233 for a .755 percentage. As a junior he scored in double figures in 10 games and rebounded in double figures in seven. He had 2 1 rebounds and 20 points in two games against Clemson. He did not play in the last four games of the season. He played 937 minutes in 29 games as a sophomore and 690 minutes in 26 games as a junior. He has started 36 games for the Terps. He came to Maryland from Robert M. Callaway High where he captained the Jackson, Mississippi team to a sub-district championship. He was the team's Most Valuable Player in high school. He has two brothers and seven sisters and is majoring in Criminology. TEAM CO-CAPTAIN.
