RICHMOND, Va. - Jason Dubois capped a three-run fifth inning with a two-run
home run to help Virginia Commonwealth to a 4-3 win over Maryland on Friday
afternoon at The Diamond. The win improved the Rams to 15-5 on the season,
while the Terrapins fell to 3-7-1.
Dubois, who also had a single, scored twice in addition to driving in two
runs. Cory Bauswell also had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a
stolen base. Ian Caballero also had a multiple-hit game, going 2-for-4 and
also collecting a stolen base.
Marc Fisher settled down after struggling early to strike out 10 batters
while walking none in registering his first complete game of the season.
Fisher remains unbeaten as he improved his record to 6-0 on the season.
Maryland took the early lead in the top of the third inning when Larry Long
reached first after being hit by a pitch. He advanced to second on an
errant pickoff throw by Bauswell, then moved to third on a bunt single by
Eric Beer. Long then scored on a double play.
Maryland led 2-0 when Virginia Commonwealth came to bat in the bottom of
the fourth inning. Dubois led off the inning by reaching on an error. He
advanced to third on a single by Bauswell, and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Kevin Elrod. In the Rams' half of the fifth, with Caballero on second,
Justin Martin singled to bring Caballero home. Dubois then came up and hit
a ball over the fence in left-centerfield for his fourth home run of the
season to give Virginia Commonwealth the lead. Maryland would add a run in
its half of the seventh, but would do no more damage.
Virginia Commonwealth was originally scheduled to conclude the series with
Maryland with single games at Maryland on Saturday and Sunday, but
inclement weather conditions have made the Terrapins' field unplayable. The
Rams will instead face Brown in a doubleheader on Saturday at the Diamond.
The first game is scheduled for 2 p.m., with the second game beginning one
hour after the conclusion of the first.
