ATLANTA - Cory Vance and Ben Sheeter combined on a
seven-hitter for Georgia Tech Saturday night, while Brad Stockton
delivered a tie-breaking double in the seventh inning to lift the
10th-ranked Yellow Jackets past Maryland, 5-1, at Russ Chandler
Stadium.
Pitching out of two jams in the fourth and sixth innings, Vance
scattered seven hits over seven innings with one walk and nine
strikeouts, leading the Jackets (22-6, 4-1 ACC) to their 20th win in the
last 22 games. Sheeter held the Terrapins (5-12-1, 0-4) hitless over the
final two innings to preserve the win.
Vance outdueled Maryland's Joe Hart (1-2), who blanked Tech
for five innings before Richard Lewis singled and scored on Mark
Teixeira's double in the Jacket sixth, tying the game at 1-1. Tech chased
Hart in the seventh with four runs. Derik Goffena and Jahmal Overton led
off with singles and both scored on Stockton's double, giving the Yellow
Jackets a 3-1 lead.
Stockton scored one batter later on a ground ball by Victor
Menocal, who eventually scored on a wild pitch for a 5-1 Tech lead.
Maryland got on the board first with three singles in the top of the
sixth, Frank Valois driving in Casey Trout with the only Terp run of the
game.
Hart gave up all five Tech runs in 6-1/3 innings, giving way to
Jared Vogt in the seventh.
The teams conclude their conference series at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
