Baseball Drops Doubleheader to North Carolina

April 11, 1999

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore lefthander Ryan Snare recorded his first career complete-game victory in the opener, and junior right fielder Matt McKay went 4-for-5 in the nightcap, leading North Carolina (28-8, 5-6 ACC) to a doubleheader sweep of Maryland (13-15-1, 4-7 ACC) today at Shipley Field. After losing a 2-1 heartbreaker to the Terps on Friday, the Tar Heels concluded the three-game series by winning 4-2 in the first game today and 17-5 in the final game.

Snare allowed just two runs on four hits, and held the Terps scoreless through the last eight innings. Both runs, which Maryland scored in the first inning, were unearned. The Terps were clinging to a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning when sophomore left fielder Tyrell Godwin belted a two-run triple in the seventh inning to put the Tar Heels up for good. Sophomore catcher Dan Moylan added an insurance run when he blasted a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning.

The Terps got a solid performance in the opening game from starter Fred Weaver (Hummelstown, Pa.), who pitched 5.2 innings, struck out four batters and allowed just one run. Offensively, senior left fielder Eric Beer (New City, N.Y.) went 1-for-3 and scored the first of Maryland's two runs in the first inning.

In the nightcap, McKay powered a five-run third inning by smacking a three-run home run to put the Tar Heels up 7-2. The Terps narrowed the gap to 7-3 in the fifth inning on an RBI single by sophomore first baseman Chuck Easter (Baltimore, Md.), but North Carolina broke open the game by scoring 10 runs in the final four innings.

Beer and Easter led the Terps offensively in the second game. Beer hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season in the sixth inning, and Easter went 3-for-5 at the plate.

Maryland's next game is on Tuesday at 3 p.m. against Richmond at Shipley Field.
