Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader from Howard, 10-5, 14-2

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshman pitcher Ray Wagner (Severna Park, Md.) and junior pitcher Jamie Hammond (Greesnboro, N.C.) each collected a victory, leading Maryland (12-13-1) to a sweep of Howard (8-20) in a pair of seven-inning games by scores of 10-5 and 14-2.

Wagner pitched 6.1 innings and was back up by the Terps fifth consecutive game with 10 or more runs. Junior designated hitter Craig Munroe (Thornhill, Ontario) paced Maryland with three hits, while senior shortstop Casey Trout (Gambrills, Md.) and senior left fielder Eric Beer (New City, N.J.) each had two hits.

Hammond pitched 5.0 innings in the nightcap, and the Terps helped him out by hitting four home runs, two of which were grand slams. Sophomore first baseman Chuck Easter (Baltimore, Md.) hit two home runs, one of which was a grand slam, freshman third baseman Ray Gemmill (Silver Spring, Md.) hit a grand slam, and Munroe also hit a home run.

Maryland now faces North Carolina in a critical three-game ACC series this weekend at Shipley Field. The Terps and Tar Heels will square off Friday at 3 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
