Terps Top Heels In The Ninth, 2-1

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Senior shortstop Casey Trout (Gambrills, Md.) led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a home run, propelling Maryland (13-13-1, 4-5 ACC) to a dramatic 2-1 upset of No. 15 North Carolina (26-8, 3-7 ACC) today at Shipley Field. Trout, who recorded his 100th career RBI with the home run, hit a 1-0 pitch off of Tar Heel relief pitcher Derrick DePriest that just stayed inside the left field foul pole.

Maryland got a stellar performance from starting pitcher Tom Curtiss (Ardmore, Pa.). In 8.2 innings, he allowed just one run on four hits and struck out nine batters. The only run Curtiss allowed was in the first inning, on a RBI single by Tar Heel third baseman Ryan Earey that scored catcher Chris Moylan.

The Terps struck back in the seventh inning, when junior designated hitter Craig Munroe (Thornhill, Ontario) lined a double into left field. After freshman pinch runner Tony Jackson (Ellicott City, Md.) was put into the game to replace Munroe, he scored on a throwing error by DePreist to tie the game at 1-1.

Curtiss left the game after allowing two consecutive hits in the top of the ninth inning, but sophomore relief pitcher Jared Vogt (Pasadena, Md.) got the Terps out of a bases-loaded jam to set the stage for Trouts heroic blast.

Marylands win today marked the first time that it has won eight consecutive games since 1980. The Terps longest winning streak that year was 10 games.
