CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Tyrell Godwin went 4-for-5, scored four runs, hit a two-run home run and had four RBI, leading North Carolina (32-9, 7-8 ACC) to a 23-8 win over Maryland (13-25, 0-12 ACC) in ACC baseball action on Saturday at Boshamer Stadium. The game marked the finale of a three-game conference series between the two schools.

The Tar Heels wasted no time jumping on Maryland, scoring five runs and the first inning alone and going up 9-0 after three innings. Sean Farrell hit a two-run home run in the first inning to key the five-run outburst.

Maryland got a run back in the top of the fourth inning on a RBI single by Jason Mohap. North Carolina, however, answered with a six-run sixth inning to take a 15-1 lead. Godwin keyed that inning with his two-run home run.

After the Tar Heels stretched the lead to 18-1 in the seventh inning, the Terps got seven runs back in the top of the eighth inning. Ken Beck and Larry Long each drilled a two-run double.

North Carolina, however, iced the game with five more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Chris Elmore (5-1) pitched seven innings for the win while Jamie Hammond (3-7) took the loss.

Long and Brian Patenaude led the Terps with two hits each.

Maryland returns to action Tuesday at home against UMBC at 7 p.m.
