ELON COLLEGE, N.C.- Center fielder Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.) homered to lead off the game for the second time in two days as the Maryland baseball team lost to Elon, 11-2, Sunday afternoon at Elon in the series finale.

With Swope's home run, Maryland grabbed an early 1-0 lead. Elon struck back in the bottom of the third as Adam Grissom belted a grand slam over the right field fence to make the score 4-1. The Phoenix loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter by Maryland starter Mike Dallmeyer (Enola,Pa.).

Elon starter Scott Light (1-0) was overpowering as he struck out 14 batters on the day in seven innings for his first victory of the season. Light surrendered just one run on five hits on the day. Dallmeyer (0-1) threw four innings giving up four runs on three hits with three strikeouts.

The Phoenix added three more runs in the fifth inning as Mike Hromodka hit a RBI-double and Adam Grissom followed him with a RBI-single. Jason Tuttle then singled to center to bring home Grissom to make the score 7-1.

Elon struck again in the sixth with four more runs to increase their lead to 11-1. Morgan Frazier got the first RBI of the inning with a double scoring Whit Bryant. Mike Hromodka followed with a run-scoring double down the right field line. The big blow in the inning came when Adam Grissom hit his second home run of the game, a two-run shot, to give Elon an 11-1 lead.

The Terrapins added one run in the eighth to close out the scoring.

The Terps now stand 1-3 on the season while Elon improves to 5-1. Maryland is back in action Friday, Feb. 16, when they travel to Charleston, S.C., for the Citadel Invitational. The Terrapins will face the Citadel on Friday at 5 p.m. while they will face George Mason Saturday and West Virginia on Sunday.
