Baseball Falls In 10 Innings To The Citadel, 5-4

CHARLESTON, S.C.- Jared Stuart (Corning, N.Y.) pitched a career-high seven innings as the Maryland baseball team (1-4) lost a hard-fought 5-4 decision to The Citadel in 10 innings, Friday night at The Citadel Invitational. Stuart was impressive fanning a career-best six while limiting the Bulldogs to two runs on six hits.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the first with a two-out single off the bat of Stuart Jordan to give the 'Dogs a 1-0 advantage. The Terps answered with a run in the top of the second when Daryl Whitmer (Waldorf, Md.) hit a single scoring John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.). McCrudy led off the inning with a single to left.

The Citadel reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the second when Hudson Belk grounded out to shortstop, scoring David Griffin. Griffin led off the inning with a single and later stole second and advanced to third on an error by Terrapin catcher Kevin McDonald (Rockaway, N.J.).

The Terrapins took their first lead of the night in the top of the fifth inning with two runs. Sean Lomas (Brewster, N.Y.) got things started with a single and later scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Brian Patenaude. Steve Oursler (Clinton, Md.) followed with a towering double down the left field line scoring Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.) to give the Terps a 3-2 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Matt Swope (1-for-2, 2 runs) and Brian Patenaude both singled to give Maryland a man on first and third with no outs. Steve Oursler (2-for-5, 2 RBI) then delivered his second RBI of the game with a single to right scoring Swope and increasing the Terrapin lead to 4-2.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Bulldogs struck again with two runs to tie the score at four. Stuart Jordan delivered a RBI-sacrifice fly and Jason Randall lined a single to right to even everything up.

Both teams failed to score in the ninth and the game moved to extra innings. The Terps went scoreless in the top of the tenth and the Bulldogs scored one in the bottom half of the inning to win the game, 5-4. After the first two batters of the inning reached by a walk and a hit batter, Jason Randall laid down a perfect bunt to load the bases. David Griffin then hit a fielder's choice to force in the winning run.

Randy Corn (1-0) pitched two innings to pick up the win for the Bulldogs while Mike Dallmeyer (0-2) suffered the loss for the Terps.

Maryland is back in action tomorrow against George Mason in the second game of The Citadel Invitational for both schools. The Patriots lost to Tennessee today by a score of 5-3. The action is set to begin at 10 a.m.
