Manhattan, Kan. - The Kansas State Wildcats completed a two-game sweep of Maryland
with a 10-8 baseball victory on Tuesday afternoon at Frank Myers Field.
The game was delayed 40 minutes in the top of the sixth inning due to rain,
but was cut short in the bottom of the seventh due to Maryland's travel
schedule.
With the win, Kansas State moved to 14-20 overall, while Maryland fell to
10-21 on the season. The Wildcats have won three of their last four games
since breaking a five-game losing streak on April 6.
Maryland jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first and second innings, as the
Terrapins took advantage of three Wildcat fielding errors. Kansas State
responded in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead with six runs
on five hits and two Terrapin errors. The six-run inning was highlighted
by junior Osmar Castillo's two-run double and Pat Maloney's two-run single.
The Wildcats added two more runs in the third inning off a RBI-single by
Castillo and a sacrifice fly by Maloney to take an 8-5 lead.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Maryland tied the game with a three runs
on three hits in the fifth inning on RBI singles by freshman Jeremy
Suarez (Lakewood, N.J.) and junior Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.). Maloney then broke the tie with his
single to center field in the bottom of the inning that scored junior Nick
Sorensen from second base. After the 40-minute rain delay, Mark English
added the final K-State run in the sixth inning with his third home run of
the season, a solo shot over the left-field wall.
Maloney led Kansas State offensively with his 2-for-2 day at the plate with
four RBIs and a run scored, while junior Osmar Castillo posted his 15th
multiple-hit game of the season with his 2-for-4 afternoon that included
three RBIs and a run scored. Junior Nick Sorensen extended his season-high
hitting streak to seven games, as he tallied a 2-for-3 performance with two
runs scored.
Senior outfielder Brian Patenaude (Marietta, Ga.) once again led Maryland offensively, as
he turned in a 2-for-4 afternoon with two runs scored and a RBI, while
outfielder Matt Swope earned a 2-for-4 day with a RBI and a run scored.
Junior left-handed pitcher Tyson Helsel picked up his first victory as a
Wildcat, as he allowed just a walk in one-third of an inning. Senior
left-handed pitcher Kelvin Day earned his fourth save of the season, as he
pitched two innings of no-hit ball with one strikeout. With the save, Day
moved into a tie with Bill Schafer (1989) and Brian Thompson (1996) for
eighth place for single-season saves in school history.
Right-handed sophomore pitcher Matt Basinger (Connellsville, Pa.) dropped to 1-1 on the year in taking the
loss for Maryland in relief of sophomore starter Steve Schmoll (Rockville, Md.). Basinger allowed one
