Virginia answered with five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-1 lead. The Cavaliers had four hits in the inning including SS Hunter Wyant's three-run homer to left field.
The Cavaliers tallied another two runs in the fourth inning to stretch the lead to 7-1. Shawn McCleary had a RBI groundout and Wyant drove in his fourth run of the contest with a sacrifice fly.
A pair of sacrifice flies by McDonald and Swope in the sixth cut the Maryland deficit to 7-3. Virginia got one run back in the home half of the sixth with an unearned run off Maryland reliever Matt Basinger (Connellsville, Pa.).
In the Maryland eighth, McDonald slammed his team-leading seventh home run down the right field line to pull the Terps to 8-5. A pinch-hit RBI single later in the inning by sophomore Edwin Thompson (Jay, Maine) closed the Virginia lead to 8-6.
