COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Wake Forest's Cory Sullivan pitched a complete game and also went 2-for-4 at the plate as the Demon Deacons downed Maryland, 20-3, Friday night at Shipley Field. Sullivan limited the Terrapins to just five hits and three runs while striking out four.
The Demon Deacons scored one run in both the first and third innings before exploding for seven runs in the fourth. Wake tallied five hits in the fourth including a two-out, two-run single by Corey Slavik and a two-out, three-run homer from Ryan Johnson. The seven-run outburst stretched the Wake lead to 9-0 after 3.5 innings.
The Deacs added another run in the top of the fifth before Maryland broke into the scoring column. A sacrifice fly by CF Daryl Whitmer (Waldorf, Md.) scored the Terps' first run of the game to make the score 10-1. Later in the frame, senior LF Brian Patenaude (Marietta, Ga.) drilled his second home run of the year, a two-run shot, to pull the Terps to within seven at 10-3.
That was as close as Maryland would get as the Demon Deacons scored ten runs over the final two innings.
Slavik led the Wake Forest attack by going 4-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored. Carlos Brackley also had a big night as he hit two homers and drove in five.
Patenaude was the offensive leader for Maryland with a 1-for-4 performance with two runs batted in.
Sullivan tossed all nine innings to pick up his fourth win of the year. He improves to a perfect 4-0. Maryland starter Jared Stuart (Corning, N.Y.) picked up the loss and is now 2-6. Stuart threw four innings and allowed eight runs on eight hits.
The loss sends the Terps to 13-29 and 3-15 in the conference. Wake is now 33-14 overall and 15-7 in the ACC.
Both teams return to the field tomorrow in game two of the series. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Shipley Field.
