Box Score
COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Maryland reliever Mike Dallmeyer (Enola, Pa.) tossed a career-high 7.2 innings and held Towson to three hits but it was not enough as the Terps fell to the Tigers, 7-6, in 11 innings Wednesday night at Shipley Field. Dallmeyer was fantastic, as he allowed just one earned run and fanned four, but the run was the game-winning home run off the bat of Ryan Avila.
With the win, Towson improves to 28-17 while the Terrapins fall to 15-31.
The Terrapins got out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. After leading off the first with a single, senior designated hitter Brian Patenaude (Marietta, Ga.) later scored to give Maryland a 1-0 advantage.
Towson responded with two runs in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Catcher Casey Stidham drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and shortstop Brian McKenna delivered a RBI single to left to plate the Tigers' second run.
The Terrapins scored a run in the home half of the second to tie the contest at two. In the Maryland third, senior third baseman Steve Oursler (Clinton, Md.) launched a solo home run to left to put the Terps back on top at 3-2.
The seesaw affair continued in the Towson fourth as the Tigers scored three runs to regain the lead. Stidham knocked in his second run of the game with a single to center and Mike Costello hit his seventh homer of the season, a two-run shot to right center, to make the score 5-3 Towson.
Freshman second baseman Jeremy Suarez (Lakewood, N.J.) brought the Terps to within one in the bottom of the sixth with a RBI single to right to cut the Tiger lead to 5-4. Oursler (3-for-4, 3 RBIs) then gave the Terps the lead in the seventh with his second homer on the night, a two-run shot, to put Maryland ahead 6-5. The two-home run game for Oursler was the first of his career and the third by a Maryland player this season.
The Maryland lead was short lived as Towson scored an unearned run in the eighth to tie the contest at six. Pinch runner Curtis Lester scored on a passed ball by Maryland catcher Preston Taylor (College Park, Md.) for the Towson equalizer.
The game remained deadlocked until the 11th inning when Avila drilled his fourth homer of the year for the game-winning run. Towson reliever Jason Summerlin pitched a perfect 11th to record his second save.
Jason Walter earned the victory for Towson. Walter (2-1) allowed just one hit in three innings to earn his second win. Dallmeyer was the tough-luck loser for the Terps and is 0-5 on the year.
Maryland is back in action Friday night at home against No. 16 Florida State. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
