COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The University of Maryland women's swimming and diving team upset No. 12 Virginia, 179-121, Saturday afternoon at the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium in College Park. The loss was the first for Virginia this season and the first win for Maryland in six years over the Cavaliers.

The Terrapins dominated the dual meet by winning 13 of the 16 events. Among the winners for Maryland included freshman Elizabeth Lavell (Annapolis, Md.), who set two new schools records on the day and a new pool record.

Lavell set new school and pool records by winning the 500-free in a time of 4:46.43. The time broke the Maryland record and the pool record, which was held by current Terrapin Kelly Bowman (Hauppauge, N.Y.) by nearly three seconds (4:49.19). The time of 4:46.43 was also a NCAA "A" standard for Lavell.

Lavell also set a new school record in the 1000-free (9:53.40), breaking her own school record time of 9:56.24, which she set earlier in the year at the Terrapin Cup Invitational. Lavell finished second in the 1000-free to Virginia's Cara Lane, as she net a new pool record with a time of 9:46.89.

Four Maryland swimmers each won two events to help pace the Terrapins to the victory. Senior Petra Adamkova (Nachod, Czech Rep.) led the way on Senior Day by finishing first in both the 50-free (23.21) and the 100-free (51.13). Both times were season bests for Adamkova and were NCAA "B" standard times.

Fellow senior Ashleye Henyan (Corning, N.Y.) also won two events for the Terps. Henyan won both the 1-meter dive (283.95) and the 3-meter dive (460.78) for the second time in two meets.

Junior Jill Martin (Orlando, Fla.) also had a strong meet by sweeping both breaststroke events for Maryland. Martin earned top honors in the 100-breast (1:04.96) and the 200-breast (2:18.85).

Freshman Megan Knepper (Williamsport, Md.) was the fourth Maryland swimmer to win multiple events. Knepper won both the 100-back (57.08) and the 200-back (2:02.45) for the victors. Both times were also new career highs for the freshman swimmer.

Other winners for the Terps included senior Kelly Bowman in the 200-free (1:49.63) and junior Bridget Mallon (Arlington, Va.) in the 100-fly (55.99). Both times were NCAA "B" standard times.

The victory improved the Terrapins to 10-2 overall and 4-2 in the ACC. The loss dropped the Cavaliers to 9-1 on the year and 4-1 in the conference. The 10 victories for Maryland also tied a school-record for wins in a season, equaling the mark set by the 1995-96 squad.

In the men's meet, No. 12 Virginia rolled to a 199-96 victory over the Terrapins. The win improved UVa to 8-2 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the ACC while the Terps dropped to 4-8 on the year and 1-5 in the conference.

For the Terps, two individuals won events. Freshman Erik Weinberg (Phoenix, Md.) captured top honors in the 100-back (50.17) and sophomore diver Steven Vigilante (Plano, Texas) won the 1-meter dive (292.57).
