Maryland Gymnastics Tops Temple In Home Opener

College Park, MD--- The University of Maryland women's gymnastics team defeated Temple, 193.450-190.525. The Terps improve to 3-4 on the season with the win, the first at its new home facility, the Comcast Center. Top performances were delivered by junior Sarah Hoenig and freshman Rachel Martinez. Both gymnasts posted a 9.9, on the beam and the floor, respectively. Martinez, the only all-around competitor during the evening, finished with a 39.125.

The Terps and Owls kept it close after the first two events, the vault and the bars. Both Martinez and Temple's Alexis Zafferis recorded a team and meet high score on the vault, a 9.700. Terp Kristi Skowronski stepped up on the bars, earning a 9.825 for her routine.

Teammate Martinez scored a 9.700 on the bars as well. Temple's Brynne Hillman notched a 9.725 on the bars to keep it close for the Owls. At the end of the first two events, the teams were head-to-head, with Maryland sitting on a 0.25 lead.

However, Maryland used its strongest event, the beam, to break away from Temple. Hoenig, the 2002 NCAA Regional Participant, set the tone with a 9.900. Martinez delivered with a 9.825 and senior Catherine Gardner and freshman Cameron Logan hit their consistent, 9.700.

The Terps dazzled the crowd on the floor exercise; each Maryland gymnast earned above a 9.600. Martinez posted 9.900 and Logan earned a 9.750.

Maryland will close out the month at Georgia, taking on the Bulldogs on Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m.
