Maryland Gymnastics Trounces Competition, Winning Quad Meet With A Season-High 196.025

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's gymnastics team dominated the competition in a four-way meet at Comcast Center Saturday, beating out teams from North Carolina, George Washington and Pennsylvania with a season-high score. The Terps finished with a score of 196.025, followed by North Carolina (194.925), George Washington (193.675) and Pennsylvania (188.200).

The Terps shattered records on this eventful evening, coming in first place on the bars, beam and the floor. The 49.225 team score on the bars ties for the third highest mark in school history, while the overall score of 196.025 is program's fifth highest mark ever.

Individually, freshman Rachel Martinez, EAGL Gymnast of the Week earlier this month, placed first with a 39.425 in all-around competition. Martinez who already is atop the Terp record books with the second highest all-around score (39.525), also tied the sixth all-time high mark with tonight's performance. Martinez posted a 9.825 (vault), 9.875 (bars), 9.850 (beam) and a 9.875 (floor). The young gymnast placed in the top two in every event.

Another freshman, Kristi Skowronski delivered big for Maryland. Posting a career-high 39.150 in the all-around, she placed second among all competitors. Skowronski's performance was highlighted with a season-high 9.900 on the bars.

On the beam, Maryland notched the five top spots: freshmen Martinez and Alexandria Gatch came in first with marks of 9.850, and senior co-captain Stacey Celenski, freshman Skowronski and senior Catherine Gardner all posted marks of 9.825.

George Washington's Heather Kaufman came in third in the all-around with a 38.050 and Courtney Bumpers of North Carolina rounded out the top four with a 38.875. The Tar Heels won the vault, behind Bumpers' 9.875. Pennsylvania's Leah Moon posted a team-high 37.550 in the all-around.

The Terps will take a short break and travel to Washington, D.C., Wednesday evening to face George Washington for the third straight time this season. The teams are 1-1 vs. each other in 2003. After that, the Terps host EAGL opponent Rutgers on "senior night" Saturday, March 15 at 7 p.m. at the Comcast Center.
