Track And Field Wins Patriot Games

FAIRFAX, Va. - The University of Maryland track and field teams, in their second meet of the young season at George Mason University, garnered nine victories Saturday at the Patriot Games in Fairfax, Va., en route to two team victories.

Both the men's and the women's teams finished first in the team standings. The women earned 154 points, in front of George Mason (136), William & Mary (113.50), Norfolk State (76.50), Morgan State (35) and East Carolina (33). The men's team earned 132.50 points, ahead of George Mason (108), Norfolk State (104.50), William & Mary (83), Morgan State (65) and East Carolina (6).

Teyarnte' Carter and Shenae Dawkins led the women, as each won an individual event and then helped the 4X400 relay team earn a victory. Carter finished first in the 200 meters with a time of 24.74 and Dawkins was victorious in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.03, while the relay team with the duo, Kristina Keegan and Tia Burley captured a win (3:52.10).

Toni Jefferson was also a winner, running the 60 meters in a time of 7.67 to get the victory.

The women's distance medley team, comprised of Meghan Braffet, Laurel Jefferson, Justine Kovacs and Danielle Siebert was a runner-up with a time of 11:56.68. Other second-place finishers were Allison Carney (mile, 4:57.96), Tia Burley (400 meters, 55.49), Labelle Hillgrove (weight throw, 48-10.25) and Zhanna Barer (pole vault, 11-3.75).

Braffet finished third in the mile (4:58.96).

Florent Groberg led the men's team at the Patriot Games, as he was a winner in the mile (4:20.30) and was a part of the distance medley that won with a time of 10:13.70.

Other winners for the men included Rob Frelow, who finished first in the 200 meters with a time of 22.45, John Collins, who won the weight throw (52-3.75) and Brian Grubel, who was victorious in the pole vault (14-6.00).

Also performing well for the men's team were Beau Fay (second-place, weight throw, 51-9.25), Nathaniel Zola (second-place, 3000 meters, 8:27.97) and Harold Manning (second-place, 400 meters, 50.77).

The track teams are back in action next weekend, when they travel to South Bend, Ind., for the Meyo Invitational on Friday and Saturday and back to George Mason for the George Mason Invitational on Saturday.
