Terp Gymnastics Sets New Season High Against Iowa

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 29-ranked women's gymnastics team notched a season-high 196.350, in a close loss to No. 9 ranked Iowa. The Terps' team score is the fourth-best in school history. Sophomore Rachel Martinez finished second in the all-around competition with the score of 39.475.

Maryland is now 6-6 for the season, unable to catch Iowa, who ended with a 197.150. Senior Alexis Maday won the all-around title with the score of 39.750.

On the vault for the Terps, Martinez led the team with a 9.900. Senior co-captain Sarah Hoenig recorded a new career-high score of 9.875 for the team's second-best score. Sophomore Rebecca Ruppert added a 9.825 to the mix to give Maryland a team score of 49.025 on vault competition, tying the all-time school record.

The Terps notched a higher score on the bars, a 49.050. Led by sophomores Ginny Scott (9.875) and Martinez (9.850), three other Terps notched an identical 9.775. The mark is Scott's personal best.

Maryland was successful on the beam as well, having four scores of a 9.825 or higher. Hoenig led the way with a 9.9, followed by freshman Rachel Colon's 9.875. The score is a season and career-high for Colon. Both Martinez and fellow sophomore Alexandria Gatch recorded a 9.825.

Terps saved their best for the last event of the evening: the floor competition. All six gymnasts recorded a 9.825 or better for the first time this season. Both Martinez and Scott poured in a 9.9, the second and third of the year for each, respectively. Hoenig recorded a season and career-high 9.875, while both junior Leah Brill and freshman Marisa St. Louis notched season-highs, a 9.825 and a 9.850, respectively. As a whole, Terps combined for a 49.350, the fourth-highest score ever in program history.

Next, Maryland is set to travel to West Virginia on Feb. 22 to take on the Mountaineers and Michigan. The contest is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
