Freshman Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.) won the 100-yard butterfly, claiming Maryland's first individual ACC title of the meet. deToll's time of 53.66 is a new school record, surpassing Bridget Mallon's previous mark of 54.01 set in 2002. The time also automatically qualifies her for next month's NCAA Championship.
Overall, the Terps remain in fourth place with 360 team points behind Virginia (427), Florida State (410) and North Carolina (401). Duke rounds out the top five (200).
Junior Elizabeth Lavell (Annapolis, Md.) and freshman Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia) took second and third with times of 4:16.46 and 4:18.02, respectively, in the 400-yard individual medley. Sophomore Inbal Levavi (Ichad, Israel) finished fifth in the event with a mark of 4:19.57. All three times made the NCAA 'B' cut.
Junior Megan Knepper (Williamsport, Md.) also posted a 'B' cut, finishing third in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.60. Junior Marina Mulyayeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) and sophomore Krisztina Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary) each notched fifth-place finishes in the 100-fly and 100-yard breaststroke, respectively. Mulyayeva swam 54.78 and Kovacs swam 1:03.82. Both times were 'B' cuts. Junior Chrissy Miller (South Seaside Park, N.J.) finished sixth in the 200-yard freestyle with a 'B' cut time of 1:50.64.
Maryland's 400-yard medley relay team of Knepper, Kovacs, deToll and Mulyayeva finished third with a 'B' cut time of 3:42.96.
Sophomore Barbara Sumrall (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and freshman Amber Walter (Kalispell, Mont.) placed 10th and 15th in the 100-fly with times of 55.48 and 57.25, respectively. Senior Valerie Courtois (Saveuse, France) finished 12th in the 200-free (1:51.02), and junior Caitlin Gannon (Evans City, Pa.) placed 18th in the 100-back (58.67). Sophomore Lindsey Jerdonek (Brecksville, Ohio) took 17th in the 100-breast, winning the Bonus Consols with a time of 1:06.57, and freshman Katarina Csomova (Komarno, Slovakia) finished 20th in the event (1:07.27). Freshman Erica Suguiyama (Ijamsville, Md.) placed 18th in the 100-fly (57.35).
The ACC Women's Swimming and Diving Championship concludes tomorrow at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center in Charlottesville, Va. Preliminaries begin at 11 a.m. and finals start at 7 p.m.
