  • The University of Maryland opens up ACC play on the road at Duke on Friday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m. The game will showcase two of the top teams in the nation as the Terps enter the contest as the second-ranked team in the nation, while the Blue Devils are currently ranked fourth.
  • Maryland (1-0, 0-0) opened its season on Saturday, Feb. 21, with a 16-6 win over Richmond. Duke (2-0, 0-0) won a pair in its opening week of play defeating UMBC, 17-4, and Northwestern, 15-9.
  • This is the first time in Maryland women's lacrosse history that the Terps have played twice in February, and only the third time the team has played in the second month of the year. Maryland is 2-0 all-time in February.
  • The Terrapins lead the all-time series 8-2, but Maryland has not won at Duke since 2000. In fact, Maryland is just 2-2 all-time at Duke. The Terps are 4-0 against the Blue Devils at home, and 2-0 at neutral sites.
  • Duke's most recent win against Maryland came in Durham in 2002. The Blue Devils edged the Terps, 9-8. The Terps came away with a 9-8 overtime win in College Park, Md., in last year's meeting.
  • With the win over Richmond, head coach Cindy Timchal is now just two wins shy of 300 for her career. She is the winningest coach in women's lacrosse history.

    Scouting The Blue Devils

  • Duke (2-0) is led by head coach Kerstin Kimel, who is in her 10th season at Duke and 11th overall. Her record with the Blue Devils is 85-55. Kimel is a 1993 graduate of the University of Maryland.
  • The Blue Devils have four players with five or more goals. Michelle Mesner scored four goals in the season opener against UMBC and added three more against Northwestern to lead the team with seven. Katie Chrest and Corinne Broesler each opened the season with a pair of hat tricks for the Blue Devils.
  • Freshman Kristin Waagbo leads the team in points, though, with nine. Waagbo, an Ellicott City, Md., native has three goals and six assists for Duke.

    Scoring Streaks

  • Kelly Coppedge enters the 2004 season with the team's longest scoring streak: 26. Other notable streaks include sophomore Delia Cox (7) and Acacia Walker (4).

    Tewaaraton Candidates

  • Senior Kelly Coppedge and junior Acacia Walker were recently named to the 2004 Tewaaraton Trophy watch list. This preseason list highlights the players to watch, as all NCAA Division I, II and III players vie for the most coveted and prestigious award in varsity lacrosse, the Tewaaraton Trophy. The trophy will be presented in Washington, DC on June 3, 2004 at a banquet honoring the finalists and trophy winners. The ceremony will be held at the National Geographic Society Auditorium and broadcast by CSTV.

    More On Duke

  • The Blue Devils have 13 players who hail from the state of Maryland. Duke's Kristen Waagbo and Lauren Kickham graduated from Mount Hebron in Ellicott City, the same high school as Maryland's Annie Collins. Kristy Dirks of Duke and Maryland's Acacia Walker were high school teammates at Annapolis High.
  • Duke has made the last six NCAA tournaments.
  • Inside Lacrosse rated Duke as the third-best team in the nation, commenting that "the Blue Devils are loaded with young talent and an outstanding freshman class. That's good news for a team that's also working through injuries from the offseason."
