The University of Maryland was unable to find success at the plate against Vanderbilt University's Jeremy Sowers. Sowers was dominating and did not allow a hit to the Terps (0-5) after Matt Maropis led off the game with a single to centerfield. Sowers struck out 11 batters with no walks to give the Commodores (5-0) their third consecutive shutout win.
Kevin Hart struggled as he took the mound in his first start this season. Vanderbilt got on the board in the third when Warner Jones hit a two-out, two-run double deep to left field. They struck again in the fifth when Mike Baxter and Jones each had two-run singles, increasing the Commodores' lead to 6-0.
Hart finished that day with six runs allowed on seven hits with five strikeouts in 4.0 innings pitched. Chris Bowen came in to relieve Hart in the fifth inning. He pitched two innings of relief, giving up one run on three hits with three strikeouts.
Making his collegiate debut, Dan Waters came in to pitch in the seventh inning giving up one run on one hit. Josh Andrews made his season debut, taking the mound for the eighth inning. Andrews struck out one batter and did not surrender a hit.
Dan Melvin was the only Maryland player aside from Maropis to reach base in the game. He reached first base in the second inning on an error by the second baseman.
Maryland will be in action next when they meet Belmont University on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 2:00 p.m. in Nashville, Tenn.
