Box Score

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Maryland came away with its first victory of the season by defeating Lipscomb University, 10-6. Ben Pfinsgraff earned the win with a solid pitching performance out of the bullpen

The Terps broke out of their offensive slump, registering 10 runs on 13 hits. The team wasted no time getting on the board. Anthony Buffone came around to score a run in the first inning after Will Frazier hit an infield single and the Bisons' shortstop made an erroneous throw. That run broke the Terps' streak of 33 consecutive scoreless innings, dating back to the third inning of their game with the College of Charleston on Feb. 21.

Lipscomb struck back in the third inning with four runs off of Terrapin starter Sean Kane to take a 5-1 lead. It scored its first run on an RBI single by Ryan Boyer. The Bisons followed that up with back-to-back home runs from Ryan Price and Zach Miller with two outs in the inning.

Pfinsgraff took the mound in the fourth and slowed down the offensive assault of the Bisons. After shutting down Lipscomb in the fourth, Pfinsgraff struck out six-straight batters. He ended the day with eight strikeouts, surrendering one run on five hits in five innings of work.

The Terrapins fought back to tie the game at five in the sixth inning. Matt Maropis came in to score when Buffone grounded into a double play. After Kevin Hart and Mike Costantino reached base later in the inning, Brian Jarosinski knocked them in with a shot over the left field wall, his second home run of the season.

Maryland added two more runs in the seventh inning behind a Buffone RBI single and Truan Mehl scoring on a passed ball. Dan Melvin came in to score another run for the Terps in the eighth on a throwing error by the Bisons' catcher.

In the ninth inning, the Terps extended their lead to 10-6 with an RBI-triple by Hart to right-center followed by an RBI-single to right field from Jordan Wilson.

Chris Bowen made an appearance in the ninth inning, striking out the only batter he faced. Justin Hulse came on to finish out the game for the Terps, getting the final two outs and securing the win. Kane pitched 3.0 innings in the game, surrendering five runs on five hits with three strikeouts.

The Terrapins will be in action next when they host Buffalo University on Friday, March 5, at 3:00 p.m. The game is tentatively scheduled to be played at Shipley Field in College Park, Md.
