BOWIE, Md. -
The University of Maryland baseball team completed its three-game sweep of the University of Hartford and notched 15 hits in its 10-3 victory this afternoon. The Terps were led by three-hit performances from junior Will Frazier and sophomore Matt Maropis.
After falling behind 3-0 to the Hawks (2-4) in the fourth inning, sophomore Brian Jarosinski brought the Terps (8-7) within one run, hitting his ninth home run of the season to score junior Kevin Hart, who had singled.
Maryland battled back to take the lead in the sixth scoring four runs. After the Terps loaded the bases, junior Jason Maxey hit a single through the left side to knock in a run. Dan Melvin followed that up by hitting a sacrifice fly to right field for an RBI. The Terrapins used their base-running skills to take advantage of an error by the Hawks' catcher and a wild pitch to bring in another two runs.
In the eighth, the Terps expanded upon their lead by scoring three more runs. After Maxey and Melvin hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, Maropis capitalized with a two-run double to right field. Bobby Ryan added another run for the Terps, scoring on a passed ball later in the inning.
Sean Kane earned his first win of the season, pitching seven innings for Maryland and striking out a career-high nine batters. Kane allowed three runs on nine hits in the game and issued just one walk.
Justin Hulse came on to relieve Kane in the eighth, and struck out two batters without surrendering a hit. Hart, who had been playing first base in the game, came on to pitch in the ninth without surrendering a run.
Maryland will be in action tomorrow as they host the Coppin State Eagles at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, Md., at 3 p.m.
