The University of Maryland baseball team defeated Georgetown University by a score of 17-4 this afternoon at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, Md. The Terps had an explosive day at the plate with 21 hits in the game.
The Terrapins (9-7) were led offensively by senior Anthony Buffone and junior Kevin Hart in the win over the Hoyas (13-9). Hart hammered in a season-high six RBI, while hitting his first two home runs since coming to Maryland.
Buffone knocked in four runs in a 4-for-6 performance, while scoring four runs as well. In the eighth inning, Buffone hit his 48th career double, making him the all-time leader in Maryland history for doubles in a career.
The Terps received a solid pitching performance from their starter, junior Chris Bowen. Bowen had six innings of solid work, not allowing an earned run while scattering four hits without issuing a walk. Bowen's outing earned him his second win of the season.
Maryland started off hot at the plate, getting two runs in the first inning off of Hart's first home run in the game. Sophomore Matt Maropis brought in another run for the Terps in the second, hitting a sacrifice fly to score junior Bobby Ryan.
In the fourth inning, the Terrapins loaded the bases and Buffone took advantage with a single to knock in his first two RBI of the game. Hart followed the hit up with a single of his own to score Buffone and junior Elliot Singletary.
The Terps' biggest offensive output came in the fifth inning with Maryland batting through the lineup. Sophomore Mike Costantino hit a single in the Terps' second at bat and came around to score two batters later when Ryan hit an RBI single. After Singletary knocked in another run, Buffone hit his second two-run single in the game. Hart capped off the big inning with his second two-run shot on the day.
Junior Will Frazier got the offense going again in the seventh for the Terps, knocking in junior Truan Mehl. Frazier was brought around to score by junior Jordan Wilson in Maryland's next at bat.
Maryland continued to pour on the offense in the eighth, with junior Joe Sargent leading off the inning with a single. After Buffone reached on a double, junior Jason Maxey hit a double down the right field line to score the pair, giving Maryland the 17-4 lead.
Freshmen Casey Baron and Mike Sharkevich as well as sophomore Seth Overbey each made relief appearances in the game. Overbey threw a scoreless inning of work in the ninth, striking out two batters and giving up just one hit.
Freshman Dan Melvin notched three hits in the game and scored three runs as well. Sophomore Brian Jarosinski had two hits against the Hoyas, joining five other Terrapins with multiple hits in the game.
Maryland will kick off its ACC action on Friday, March 19, at 7 p.m., as they travel to Tallahassee, Fla., to take on the Florida State Seminoles.
