The University of Maryland baseball team dropped their first game of a three-game series against Duke University by a score of 13-5 tonight at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, Md.
The Terrapins (9-12, 0-4 ACC) recorded 14 hits in the game, but were unable to match the Blue Devils' (14-11, 3-1 ACC) run production. Sophomore Brian Jarosinski hit his 11th home run of the season in the sixth inning for the Terps.
Duke took an early lead against the Terrapins, scoring five runs in the first three innings. Maryland was held off of the scoreboard until freshman Dan Melvin hit a single with the bases loaded in the fifth inning to score senior Anthony Buffone.
The Blue Devils responded in the sixth by knocking in another four runs. The Terrapins fought back in the bottom of the inning by bringing in four runs of their own.
Junior Bobby Ryan started the Terps off by hitting a solo shot for his first home run of the season. After Maryland got two additional runners on base, Jarosinski hit his ACC-leading 11th homer with a monstrous blast over the left field wall.
Sophomore Matt Maropis went 3-for-5 in the game and scored a run as well. Junior Will Frazier also recorded three hits against the Blue Devils.
Sophomore Seth Overbey tied his career high by striking out four batters in relief for the Terps' starter, junior Kevin Hart. Hart recorded five strikeouts in five innings of work. Junior Brooks Norris pitched 1.2 innings of relief without allowing an earned run and freshman Dan Waters did not allow a hit while pitching in the ninth inning.
The Terrapins will continue their series with Duke on Saturday, March 27, at 2 p.m., at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, Md.
