March 28, 2004

Box Score

BOWIE, Md. - The University of Maryland baseball team defeated Duke University by a score of 3-1 this afternoon at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, Md. The Terrapin victory was highlighted by strong pitching performances from juniors Sean Kane and Josh Andrews.

Kane started on the mound for the Terps (11-12, 2-4 ACC) and did not allow an earned run in seven innings of work. The Blue Devils (14-13, 3-3 ACC) were held to just four hits against the right hander. Kane struck out four batters and issued just one walk.

The Blue Devils were able to score one run in the first inning after some defensive errors by the Terrapins, but were held off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game. Andrews came in to relieve Kane in the eighth inning, and immediately shut down the Duke batters. In his two innings of work, Andrews faced just six batters and allowed only one hit, while earning his second win of the season.

Maryland came to life at the plate in the eighth inning. Junior Truan Mehl led off the inning with a single and then stole second base. Following that, sophomore Matt Maropis executed a hit-and-run perfectly with a single through the left side to score Mehl.

The Terrapins continued their offensive production in the eighth by loading the bases for sophomore Brian Jarosinski with two outs. Jarosinski did not waste the opportunity and hit a single down the left field line to bring in two runs for the Terps, giving them the 3-1 lead.

The Terrapins' next game will take place on Tuesday, March 30, at 7 p.m., when the Terrapins host Virginia Commonwealth at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, Md.
