FREDERICK, Md. -
The University of Maryland baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to North Carolina State University on Saturday at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick, Md. The Terps went down 3-0 in the first game and 8-3 in the second.
The Terrapins fell victim to a solid pitching performance from NC State's (24-10, 7-5 ACC) Vern Sterry in the first game of the doubleheader. Sterry pitched a complete-game shutout against Maryland (16-18, 2-10 ACC), allowing only three hits and striking out 11 batters with one walk.
Maryland's starter, junior Kevin Hart also had a solid performance on the mound. Hart struck out nine batters, walked one and gave up no earned runs on three hits. Junior Josh Andrews came on in relief of Hart in the eighth inning. Andrews was relieved later in the inning by junior Justin Hulse who closed out the game for the Terps.
In the second game, Maryland was able to score three runs, but that wasn't enough to overcome NC State's offensive production. The Wolfpack was able to string together eight runs on 10 hits, while the Terps put up four runs on their eight hits.
After NC State scored four runs in the top of the second, Maryland fought back by scoring two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Terps led off the inning with back-to-back singles by junior Will Frazier and freshman Dan Melvin. Sophomore Brian Jarosinski followed that up with a single of his own to load up the bases. Jarosinski was the only Terrapin with multiple hits on the night.
Frazier scored the first run of the night for the Terps as sophomore Matt Maropis recorded the RBI, reaching on a fielder's choice. Melvin came in to score Maryland's second run when junior Joe Sargent hit a single to right field.
The Terrapins were able to tack on another run in the seventh inning after senior Anthony Buffone and Hart both walked with two outs. Junior Jason Maxey took advantage of the situation and hit a double down the right field line to score Buffone.
Junior Sean Kane started on the mound for the Terps in the second game, surrendering two earned runs with four strikeouts in five innings of work. Sophomore Seth Overbey came out of the bullpen in the sixth and pitched three inning without a walk. Freshman Casey Baron came on in the ninth inning to pitch a perfect inning of relief.
The Terps will be in action on Tuesday, April 13, when they host Penn State University at 7 p.m. The game is scheduled to be played at Shipley Field in College Park, Md.
