WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The University of Maryland baseball team fell to Wake Forest University on Friday at Hooks Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C., by a score of 21-16. In the loss, senior Anthony Buffone became Maryland's all-time hit leader with 254 in his career.

The Demon Deacons (14-23, 3-13 ACC) took control of the game early by scoring five runs in the first inning and another six in the second. The Terrapins (17-23, 2-14 ACC) were able to get on the board with two runs of their own in the top of the second.

Freshman Dan Melvin recorded the two RBI for the Terps with a home run over the scoreboard in left center for his third homer of the season. Junior Kevin Hart scored on the play after he had walked to lead off the inning.

The Terps tacked on another run in the fifth inning as junior Will Frazier brought in sophomore Matt Maropis in with a single up the middle. Maropis had singled to left center in Maryland's first at bat of the inning.

After Wake Forest had expanded its lead to 18-3, the Terrapins had their largest offensive inning of the game with five runs in the seventh. Junior Truan Mehl led off the inning with a double and came in to score when the next batter, Maropis, singled to left field.

Maropis then advanced to second on a Demon Deacon error and came around to score on a Buffone single in the Terps's next at bat. Frazier followed that up with a single of his own and both he and Buffone scored later in the inning when junior Jason Maxey sent a towering shot to right field for his third home run of the season.

The Terrapins continued to fight their way back into the game, scoring six more runs in the eighth. Frazier knocked in Mehl for the first run of the inning with a single and Hart followed that up with an RBI double to score Buffone. Buffone had reached on a single to break the all-time career hit record at Maryland earlier in the inning.

Sophomore Brian Jarosinski then brought in two more runs for the Terrapins with a double deep to center field. In the Terps' next at bat, Maxey hit another home run to right field for two RBI. The homer was Maxey's second of the game and fourth of the season.

Maryland was not finished yet however, as they brought in another two runs in the top of the ninth. After junior Elliot Singletary walked in the inning, Maropis hit a home run over the centerfield wall for his second of the season.

Frazier finished the day with two RBI and two runs on four hits. Maropis went 3-for-6 and knocked in three runs while scoring a career-high three of his own. Maxey tied his career high with five RBI in the game on his two hits. Junior Chris Bowen came in as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning, marking the first time he has recorded an at bat since his freshman year (2002).

Freshman Dan Waters pitched a scoreless inning of relief in the seventh inning and junior Justin Hulse came out of the bullpen to pitch a perfect eighth inning.

Maryland will be in action again tomorrow when they meet Wake Forest for the second game of a three-game series at Hooks Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
