The University of Maryland baseball team defeated Wake Forest University on Sunday at Hooks Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C., by a score of 13-11. The Terrapins were solid at the plate and received a solid start from junior Kevin Hart in the victory.
Starting on the mound for the Terrapins (18-24, 3-15 ACC), Hart struck out a career-high 10 batters in six innings of work against Wake Forest (15-24, 4-14 ACC). Hart allowed only two runs on eight hits while issuing just one walk en route to his second win of the season.
The Terrapins got on the board first, scoring one run in the first inning. Sophomore Matt Maropis led off the game with a double to left center and came around to score when the next Terrapin batter, senior Anthony Buffone, recorded an RBI single up the middle.
After the Demon Deacons went ahead 2-1, the Terps regained their lead by scoring three runs in the third. Sophomore Brian Jarosinski walked with the bases loaded to bring in the Terps' first run of the inning. Junior Jason Maxey then brought in Buffone with a sacrifice fly to left field and Jarosinski later scored on a Wake Forest error after junior Truan Mehl reached on an infield single.
Maryland exploded offensively in the fourth inning, putting up five runs on the Demon Deacons. The first three Terrapin batters each reached base to load the bases. Jarosinski capitalized with a double down the left field line to score Maropis and Buffone. In the Terps' next at bat, Maxey hit a three-run shot deep to right field for his fifth home run of the season and third of the series.
The Terps scored another three runs in the fifth, expanding their lead to 12-2. Buffone notched two RBI when he singled to bring in Maropis, who singled earlier, and junior Bobby Ryan, who walked. Junior Will Frazier followed that up with an RBI single of his own to score Buffone.
Mehl led off the sixth inning with a double down the left field line. He scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly to right field from junior Elliot Singletary.
Wake Forest fought back to cut the Terrapins lead to 13-11 in the ninth inning and the Terrapins when junior Chris Clem was called out of the bullpen to close out the game. Clem got a Wake Forest batter to ground into a double play to record the first save of his career.
Maropis set a career high by scoring four runs in the game while stealing a base and recording a pair of hits. Buffone scored three runs on three hits and recorded three RBI against the Demon Deacons. Maxey ended with four RBI, giving him a total of 10 in the series against Wake Forest. Jarosinski notched three RBI in today's win.
Maryland will be in action again on Tuesday, April 27, when they play host to James Madison University at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick, Md. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
