The University of Maryland baseball team defeated James Madison University on Tuesday at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick, Md., by a score of 2-1. The Terrapins won in the bottom of the ninth on junior Bobby Ryan's walk-off RBI single.
Starting on the mound for the Terrapins (18-24), sophomore Ben Pfinsgraff held James Madison (25-13) in check at the plate. Pfinsgraff struck out a career-high 10 batters in seven innings of work while surrendering just one run on five hits and one walk to the Dukes.
Maryland broke onto the scoreboard in the seventh inning to tie the game at 1-1. Junior Truan Mehl stole second base in the inning after reaching base on an infield single. Mehl came around to score when junior Elliot Singletary hit a double to left center with two outs in the inning.
Junior Justin Hulse came out of the bullpen in the eighth inning to continue the Terps' dominance on the mound. Hulse struck out three batters and did not surrender a run, while giving up just one hit to the Dukes en route to his second win of the season.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Mehl reached third base on a fielding error by James Madison and came around to score the game-winning run when Ryan hit a walk-off single to right center.
The Terps will be in action again tomorrow night as they welcome West Virginia University to Harry Grove Stadium for a 7 p.m. game.
