The University of Maryland baseball team fell to No. 20 University of North Carolina on Thursday at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium in Salem, Va., by a score of 14-0.
The No. 9 seeded Terrapins (22-33, 5-22 ACC) fell victim to a solid pitching performance from No. 5 seeded North Carolina's Garry Bakker. He threw a complete-game shut out against the Terps, striking out eight batters without issuing a walk and allowing just five hits.
North Carolina took control of the game early, scoring one run in the second inning and four more in the third. The Tar Heels went on to add nine more runs, including two on a Chris Iannetta home run in the sixth inning, giving them the victory.
Starting on the mound for the Terrapins, sophomore Ben Pfinsgraff made his first career appearance in the ACC tournament. Pfinsgraff struck out four batters in 5.2 innings of work against North Carolina.
Freshman Casey Baron came out of the bullpen in the ninth inning to pitch a perfect inning of relief. Sophomore Matt Maropis was the only Terrapin with multiple hits in the game, picking up two. Senior Anthony Buffone and juniors Kevin Hart and Elliot Singletary picked up the Terrapins remaining hits.
