The University of Maryland baseball team was defeated by No. 15 University of North Carolina on Saturday at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C., by a score of 7-1. The Terrapins struggled at the plate and could not produce the runs necessary to beat UNC.
Maryland (19-29, 3-17 ACC) got on the board first for the second-straight game against the Tar Heels (34-11, 13-7 ACC). Junior Jason Maxey doubled down the right field line and came around to score when freshman Dan Melvin singled to right center in the second inning.
The Tar Heels responded by scoring a pair of runs in the third, fifth and eighth innings, while adding one more in the seventh, taking a 7-1 lead. North Carolina's starting pitcher, Garry Bakker, held the Terrapins in check at the plate, not allowing another run after the second inning.
Starting on the mound for Maryland, junior Kevin Hart struck out seven batters while walking only two in 6.2 innings of work. Junior Justin Hulse faced two batters in the eighth inning without allowing a base runner.
Maxey and Melvin were the only Terrapins with multiple hits in the game, each going 2-for-4. Junior Truan Mehl extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a single up the middle in the seventh inning.
The Terps will meet up with North Carolina again tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. for the series finale at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill.
