Terps Finish Sixth at Terp Cup

The Maryland men's swimming and diving team finished sixth at the Terrapin Cup Invitational. NC State dominated the meet scoring 1,020 points followed by West Virginia (881), Connecticut (728), West Chester (434.5), William & Mary (335.5), Maryland (288), Mary Washington (147) and Towson (26).

Sophomore Ken Golaszewski (Boulder, Colo.) started the night off placing 14th in the 1,650-free (16:49.38). Senior Erik Putkonen (Marietta, Ga.) placed 13th in the 200-back (1:56.95) followed by sophomore Eric Thomasson (Severna Park, Md.) who took 18th (1:57.72) and senior Chris Starr (Ellicott City, Md.) in 20th (1:58.17).

Freshman Matt Golebiewski (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) finished 12th in the 100-free (47.35) and junior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.) ended the meet with a 17th-place finished in the 100-free (46.25). Freshman Eric Cullen (Severn Md.) led the Terps in the 200-breast finishing 10th (2:08.83), with teammates freshman Kevin Rybicki (Lancaster, Pa.), junior Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.), junior Tony Miller (Severna Park, Md.) taking 13th, 14th and 18th respectively.

The men ended the evening with senior Andrew Foran (Atascadero, Calif.) coming in 17th in the 200-fly (1:57.66) followed by Thomasson in 19th (2:00.64), sophomore Joey Mechak in 23rd (2:02.06), and Golaszewski in 24th (2:03.46).

The Maryland women's swimming and diving team finished fifth at the Terrapin Cup Invitational. Connecticut led the way with 889 points followed by NC State (730), West Virginia (537), Richmond (459), Maryland (388.5), West Chester (377), William & Mary (297), Mary Washington (126) and Towson (59.5).

On the women's side, freshman Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan) and senior Krisztina Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary) both won events on the third night of Terp Cup. Skalinskaya took the crown in the 100-free (51.63) and Kovacs took the 200-breast (2:15.84). Senior Inbal Levavi (Kibutz Givat Haim, Israel) continued the success taking third in the 200-back (2:05.01).

Junior Kaleena Laputka (Shamong, N.J.) finished 17th in the 100-free (53.59), while junior Kat Csomova (Komarno, Slovakia) took 15th (2:27.73) in the 200-breast and teammate senior Barbara Sumrall (Chatanooga, Tenn.) placed 10th in the 200-fly (2:09.36).

The Terps return to the pool at the U.S. Open in Auburn, Ala. on Dec. 1-3.
