Friday, February 25 vs. Le Moyne: The Terps had a tough first game against Le Moyne College, committing two errors and making two crucial baserunning mistakes on their way to a 5-3 loss. The two errors led to two unearned runs, both of which went to starter Chris Clem. Clem was a hard-luck loser in the game, despite going seven innings and giving up just two earned runs.
Dan Melvin scored all three of Maryland's runs and hit the ball hard all day, leading a group of 6-through-9 hitters that had all six of the Terrapins' hits. Chad Durakis and Brian Jarosinski each had two hits and an RBI, and Jason Von Behren chipped in with his second RBI of the season.
Jarosinski showed signs of breaking his early slump, making more consistent, hard contact and recording his first multi-hit game of the season.
Le Moyne's Bobby Blevins stifled Maryland hitters the first time through the lineup and held the Terps to just four hits over six innings. For the day, the Maryland offense tied a season-low with six hits and only had one extra-base hit, a double by Dan Melvin.
Saturday, February 26 vs. Towson: In a preview of Wednesday's home opener, Ben Pfinsgraff put together seven innings of nearly flawless work, holding the Tigers to just two hits and no earned runs to move to 3-0 on the season.
Pfinsgraff started the game with 5.2 hitless innings and threw 74 of his 88 pitches for strikes. He sat down nine Tigers by strikeout and gave up just a pair of singles on his way to a third straight victory. For the year, Pfinsgraff is among the conference leaders with a 1.42 season ERA and those three wins.
Pfinsgraff was caught up in an early pitching duel with Towson starter Chris Rhoades, as neither allowed a hit over their first three innings. But the Maryland offense got going in the fourth and put up a five spot on Rhoades and essentially put the game out of reach.
Justin Maxwell and Jordan Wilson each singled to start the fourth, and Brian Jarosinski got the Maryland scoring with a hard double down the left field line. Chad Durakis followed with a two-run single, and Truan Mehl drilled an outside pitch between third base and shortstop for his fourth RBI of the season. Two wild pitches later, Jason Von Behren scored to give Maryland a 5-0 lead.
Wilson bounced back after snapping a four-game hit streak to Le Moyne and put together a three-hit day against Towson. He and Maxwell, the Terps two top hitters this season, each scored a pair of runs and were two of the eight Maryland starters with at least one hit.
Sunday, February 27 at College of Charleston: The Terps got rained out against the host College of Charleston to close the weekend, leaving them to return to a snowy College Park in preparation for their Wednesday home opener. After Towson beat Le Moyne in extra innings in the first game of the day, heavy rain and winds led to a quick cancellation of the Maryland-Charleston matchup.
