Terp Women In 22nd After Day One At NCAA's

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 12 Maryland women's swimming and diving team is in 22nd place with nine points after the first day of competition at the NCAA Championships. Georgia leads the 31-team field with 211 points, followed by Auburn (137) and Arizona (120).

Senior Elizabeth Lavell (Annapolis, Md.) placed 16th in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:48.98. Lavell broke the Maryland school record in the morning preliminaries, clocking in at 4:44.12, more than a tenth of a second better than Shandra Johnson's 2003 mark.

The Terps' 200-yard freestyle relay team of seniors Chrissy Miller (Seaside Park, N.J.), Cynthia Weir (Irwin, Pa.), Megan Knepper (Williamsport, Md.) and Marina Mulyayeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) finished 13th with a time of 1:32.23.

At the morning preliminaries, Miller placed 20th in the 500-free (4:46.97), while sophomore Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia) finished 37th (4:50.95) and freshman Meghan Sackett (Cockeysville, Md.) placed 59th (4:58.77). Mulyayeva came in 30th in the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.94), and Weir placed 53rd in the 50-free (23.50). In addition, the 400-medley relay team of Knepper, sophomore Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.), Mulyayeva and Miller finished 17th (3:43.03).
