April 3, 2005

Final Stats

ATLANTA, Ga. - A day after Terrapin pitchers held it to five hits and one run, the Georgia Tech offense got rolling in the series finale, scoring 24 runs on 24 hits on its way to a 24-4 win on Sunday. Truan Mehl led Maryland with four hits, and Will Frazier extended an 11-game hitting streak with an infield single in the sixth inning.

Matt Maropis doubled twice in three plate appearances, and Dan Melvin and Elliot Singletary each had two hits. Chad Durakis and Jordan Wilson were each 1-for-4 with a run scored, and Nick Jowers drove in his seventh run of the season.

Maryland fell to 14-16 overall and 4-11 in conference play with the loss. On the horizon for the Terps is a Tuesday exhibition game against the Bowie Baysox, a Wednesday home game against UMBC and a three-game home series against No. 11 North Carolina.

An RBI double by Wes Hodges in the bottom of the first inning got the Yellow Jackets on the board, and they followed with a six-run second and a four-run third to take a quick 11-0 lead.

Tech strung together six hits to score six runs in the second inning, including a three-run double by shortstop Tyler Greene. Steven Blackwood and Jeremy Slayden each hit RBI singles, as the Yellow Jackets chased Maryland starter Brett Cecil and took a 7-0 lead.

Tyler Greene added to the Georgia Tech lead with a two-out grand slam in the fourth inning. Andy Hawranick and Jake Hall were each hit by pitches, and Danny Payne walked to load the bases before Greene's blast over the right-center field wall.

Greene contributed to a five-run fifth inning with an RBI infield single and finished the day with a career-high eight RBI.

Maryland got on the board in the fourth inning behind a Truan Mehl solo home run. Mehl's first home run of the season was his second of four hits on the day - his second straight multi-hit day.

Matt Maropis made his first appearance of the series and his first appearance of the season at first base in the game. He doubled twice in the game and drove in his fourth RBI of the season in the top of the eighth inning. Jordan Wilson and Chad Durakis each scored on the Maropis double for Maryland's third and fourth runs of the game.

Tech tacked on six more runs in the sixth inning, one in the seventh and one in the eighth, finishing the day with 24 runs and a 20-run victory. The 24 runs were the most scored by Georgia Tech this season and the most against Maryland.
