Final Stats
Four scoreless innings by Casey Baron and a four-run seventh inning lifted Maryland to a 10-5 win over Longwood University at Shipley Field on Tuesday night. Baron allowed just one hit and struck out three to earn his third win of the season, and Will Frazier put a cap on Maryland's big seventh inning with a two-run home run. Frazier moved into sole possession of second place on Maryland's career home run list with the blast - the 33rd of his career.
With the win, Maryland surpassed its win total (22) from last season and improved to 23-30 with one regular season game remaining this season. Longwood fell to 15-28 after dropping the first of two games against Maryland this week. The teams will meet again tomorrow at 4 p.m. in Maryland's regular season finale.
Baron worked through his most effective outing of the season by throwing 36 of his 49 pitches for strikes and allowing just one hit and no walks in 4.0 innings. Starter Mike Sufczynski left with a no-decision in the fifth inning after allowing four hits and two earned runs, and Seth Overbey struck out two in a 1-2-3 ninth inning to close out the game.
Matt Maropis had a game-high three hits, stole three bases, scored three runs and had two RBI in one of his best games of the season. Maropis now has a career-high 18 stolen bases this season and is in eighth place on Maryland's career stolen base list with 34.
Truan Mehl and Frazier each drove in two runs apiece, as Maryland's 1-through-4 hitters combined for all seven of the team's RBI in the game. Elliot Singletary walked, doubled and drove in a run in the game, and Joe Palumbo singled, walked and scored twice.
Maryland got on the board first with three runs in the top of the third inning. Brian Jarosinski reached base on an error to start the inning, and Bobby Ryan followed with a walk. With runners on first and second and no outs, Joe Palumbo laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Leadoff hitter Elliot Singletary fought off two-strike pitches and was able to lift a ball into right field to score Jarosinski from third and move Ryan to third. Matt Maropis lined the second pitch he saw from Clay Horn into right field to bring in Ryan, and then came around to score on an overthrow after he stole second base.
Longwood answered back with its own three-run inning in the top of the fourth. A walk and a catcher's interference got Maryland starter Mike Sufczynski into trouble early, and another walk to Louis Ullrich loaded the bases with one out. Corey Huemmer singled in two runs, and Travis Lydon hit a two-out RBI single into right field to tie the game at 3-3.
The teams went back and forth with runs to keep the game tied at 5-5. Chad Durakis scored for the Terps on a wild pitch in the fourth inning, and Matt Maropis scored his second run of the game on an RBI single by Truan Mehl in the fifth.
But Longwood had an answer in the top half of the fifth, taking a 5-4 lead before Mehl's RBI single in bottom half of the inning. Nick von Gersdorff came around to score on a throwing error by Maropis, and Tyler Childress scored a run with a sacrifice fly.
Maryland broke the 5-5 tie in a big way in the bottom of seventh inning. Joe Palumbo led off the inning with a four-pitch walk, and Elliot Singletary connected on his conference-best 24th double of the season to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Matt Maropis reached on a dropped fly ball by right fielder Louis Ullrich, and Palumbo scored the eventual game-winning run on the play. Singletary moved to third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Truan Mehl, and Will Frazier scored two more runs with his ninth home run of the season. Frazier's home run was the 33rd of his career, moving him into sole possession of second place on the Maryland career home run list.
