ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Maryland baseball team fell, 3-0, to Gardner-Webb in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday. The Bulldogs scored one run in the first inning and two in the second and held the Terps (1-3) to four hits on the day.

After yielding three runs on six hits over the first 1.2 innings, starting pitcher Ben Pfinsgraff settled down and retired 18 of the next 20 batters, including 11 straight at one point. He surrendered just one hit over his final 6.1 innings of work en route to his first complete game of the season.

Matt Taffazoli picked the win for the Bulldogs, who are 4-0 this season. He tossed 5.0 innings, yielding four hits and two walks. It was his first victory of the year. Wes Codgill and Jonathon Ban came on in relief for Gardner-Webb and preserved the lead. Both hurlers went 2.0 innings and did not allow a hit.

Gardner-Webb opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when leftfielder Joey Testa manufactured a run from the leadoff spot. After drawing a walk from Pfinsgraff, he stole second and advanced to third on a balk. With Matt Maloney at the plate, a passed ball by catcher Chad Durakis allowed Testa to score and make it 1-0 Bulldogs.

In the second inning, Gardner-Webb loaded the bases with no outs. Matt Rizzuto knocked one run in on a fielder's choice to second and Jeremy McCann brought another around to score on a single through the left side to put the Bulldogs up, 3-0.

Maryland had a pair of runners on with one out in the seventh but was unable to push any runs across. Steve Braun lined out to the second baseman and third baseman Dan Melvin grounded to short for the third out, leaving the Terrapins scoreless.

For the Terps, freshman Dan Benick was 2-for-4 with a double to right-center. He is hitting .357 (5-for-14) on the season.

Maryland plays No. 26 Winthrop in the nightcap at 6:30 p.m. Left-hander Brett Tidball (1-0, 0.00 ERA) is slated to start for the Terps.
