Ten Terps Advance to Evening Heats

Feb. 24, 2006

College Park, Md. - Ten Maryland Terrapins will be swimming tonight in the third night of competition in the 2006 ACC Men's Swimming and Diving Championship. The Terps, currently in eighth place with 118.5 points, will look to gain ground on Virginia Tech, who sits just 7.5 points ahead.

Three Terps will be swimming tonight in the 200 free. Two, senior Patrick Doyle (Norfolk, Va.) and freshman Matt Golebiewski (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) will be in the consolation final. Doyle swam a 1:38.82, a new career record. He eclipsed his previous best by .02 seconds. Golebiewski turned in a time of 1:39.36, a season best.

Sophomore Stefan Geisen (Lahnstein, Germany) will be in the bonus consolation heat thanks to a time of 1:39.96, another season best.

Freshman Dong Kim will swim in the consolation heat of the 100 back. His 50.00 is the best by a Terp this season, and earned him the 13th seed for tonight's event. The bonus consolation heat of the 100 back will feature senior Erik Putkonen (Marietta, Ga.) and sophomore Eric Thomasson (Severna Park, Md.). Putkonen's 51.04 is a season best, and Thomasson's 51.84 is a new personal record.

Junior Tony Miller (Severna Park, Md.) will be the 14th seed in tonight's 400 IM, good for a spot in the consolation final. Miller swam a 3:58.72, a personal record by nearly 3 seconds and more than 15 seconds better than his previous season-best time. Senior Andrew Foran (Atascadero, Calif.) will be in the bonus consolation heat of the 400 IM thanks to a 4:05.07, a season best.

Freshman Eric Cullen (Severn, Md.) earned the 13th seed in the 100 breast and will swim in the consolation final tonight. He recorded a 56.80 in the prelim, a new personal best and the best time swam by a Terp in the event all year. Junior Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.) just missed a slot in the consolation final and will instead swim in the bonus consolation final. He recorded a personal-best 57.59 for the 18th seed overall.

Competition resumes tonight from the Natatorium of the Campus Recreation Center in College Park at 7pm.
