Maryland Take On Dukes In Mid-Week Matchup

  • The Maryland Terrapins (10-15) will play host to Duquesne on Tuesday, March 29, at 3 p.m. Coming off a weekend series against No. 14 Miami in which the Terps upset the Hurricanes, 5-4, on Saturday, the team will welcome the Dukes to Shipley Field for a mid-week non-conference matchup.

  • Maryland has won two straight games out of conference, and five of the last six. In their last non-conference matchup, the Terps defeated No. 25 James Madison, 6-5, in Harrisonburg, Va., snapping the Dukes' 16-game winning streak in the process.

  • The Terps currently lead the all-time series with Duquesne, 4-1. Last year, the schools played twice, splitting a doubleheader in College Park. The Dukes won the first game, 14-9, but the Terps charged back to take the nightcap, 10-2. Dan Melvin had six hits on the day for Maryland and Mike Sufczynski picked up the victory during the evening contest after allowing two runs on five hits in 6.2 innings.

  • Maryland will also be in action on Wednesday when the squad travels to Norfolk, Va. for a clash with Old Dominion. It will be the first of two scheduled meetings between the schools in 2006, as the Monarchs will pay a visit to Shipley on Tuesday, April 11.

  • Both games this week will be broadcast online by WMUC Sports at www.wmucsports.com. Edan Algazy will have the call on Tuesday and Mark Leff will be on the air during Wednesday's game vs. ODU (7 p.m. first pitch).

    Scouting The Dukes

  • Coming into Tuesday's tilt, Duquesne stands 4-14 overall and 1-2 in the Atlantic 10. Last weekend the Dukes went 1-2 against St. Bonaventure, winning the series opener by a run before dropping the final two games, 4-1 and 15-4.

  • Three players currently pace Duquesne with a .333 batting average. First baseman Aaron Janusey, catcher Derek Mechling and third baseman Anthony Manley share the team lead in hitting while Steve Maiolo ranks fourth with a .308 average in 18 games. Mechling is first on the team with four home runs and a .702 slugging percentage while Janusey has recorded a team-best 20 RBI. As a club, the Dukes are batting .271.

  • On the rubber, the Dukes feature a starting rotation of left-hander Scott Chisolm (0-4, 5.76 ERA) and righties Adam Haun (1-3, 7.48), Jeff Naughton (1-0, 6.75) and Jeremy Gerger (1-2, 7.36). Chisolm has struck out a team-high 23 batters in 25.0 innings. Also for Duquesne, Nick Jones is 1-0 with one save in five relief appearances.
