Final Stats

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Maryland Terrapins (22-30, 8-22 ACC) fell to Boston College, 6-3, in the series finale on Sunday at Shea Field. Matt Maropis was 3-for-5 and Nick Jowers went 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBI, but the Eagles scored three times in the eighth to take the lead and held on to clinch the series victory.

Matt Mayer (2-2) threw 2.2 scoreless innings to earn the win in relief and closer Kevin Boggan came on for his seventh save of the year. Righty Seth Overbey (3-2), who gave up all three BC runs during the eighth, was charged with the loss.

The Terps found themselves in an early hole after Boston College scored twice in the first. Second baseman Johnny Ayers led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on a base hit by Pete Frates. With runners on the corners and Jared McGuire at the plate, the Eagles pulled off a double steal to go up, 1-0 before Shawn McGill knocked in Frates on a groundout to short to give BC a two-run edge.

In the third, Maropis stole second base after reaching on an infield single, moving into a tie with Howie Dare (1955-57) for third place on the Maryland career steals list with 51. He eventually moved to third on a wild pitch but was stranded there after Gerry Spessard struck out and Chad Durakis grounded out.

The bottom of the Maryland order went to work in the top of the fifth to knot the game at two. Following a single by Steve Braun, Jowers drilled a 1-2 offering from Nate Jeanes over the wall in left to tie things up.

The sophomore from Beltsville, Md. hurt the Eagles again in the sixth inning. Mike Murphy reached on an error by Ayers and stole second. After Dan Benick flied to center and Braun struck out against Meyer, Jowers gave the Terps a one-run advantage on an RBI single up the middle.

Boston College tied the game up in the bottom of the inning when designated hitter Jett Ruiz drove in Ryan Hutchinson on a two-out double off right-hander Kevin Biringer before going ahead in the eighth.

After lefty John Dischert retired the first Eagle batter of the inning, Overbey was called in to face McGill. Back-to-back singles by the catcher and Hutchinson gave BC two men on for Eric Campbell, who cleared the bases with a double down the left field line. He went to third on a base hit by Ruiz and scored on a sacrifice fly to put the Eagles up, 6-3.

Maryland attempted to rally against Boggan in the ninth. Jowers walked and Maropis singled, bringing the tying run to the plate in Spessard. But the redshirt freshman would go down swinging as the Eagles topped the Terps for the second straight day.
