Terps Split Home Meet For Senior Weekend

The University of Maryland men's swimming and diving team split this weekend's meet, picking up a win against Villanova (271-77) and finishing behind Pittsburgh (242-110) at home. The second session of this weekend's competition occurred Saturday morning following recognitions of this year's seniors.

The Terrapins had a successful showing in the first night of competition with sophomore Dong Kim (Bucks Co., Pa.) winning the 100-yard backstroke on the men's side (50.35) and senior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.) claiming first place in the 100 freestyle (46.61).

This morning's meet opened with the 500 free. Freshman Brian Honore led the Terps in the event with a third-place swim in 4:46.43. Junior Ken Golaszewski (Boulder, Colo.) came in fifth with his season-best time of 4:46.72.

In the first relay event of the day, the Terps claimed a second-place finish with freshman Aleksandar Damjanic (Zagreb, Croatia), sophomore Eric Cullen (Severn, Md.), junior Eric Thomasson (Severna Park, Md.) and Kim swimming a 3:29.06 in the 400 medley relay.

Damjanic went on to lead the Terps in the 200 free with a third-place finish and a season-high time of 1:44.62.

Maryland dominated the 200 IM, having the top-two finishes. Senior Tony Miller (Severna Park, Md.) won the event with a 1:57.99 while Cullen swam to second with his season best 1:58.49.

In the 200 butterfly, Thomasson swam his season best of 1:56.82 for fourth place. Miller was the top finisher for the Terps in the 200 backstroke with a 1:58.24, good for fourth place. Cullen was the top finisher for Maryland on the men's side for the 200 breaststroke, coming in fourth with his best time this season (2:09.47).

Maryland swept the top-two places in the 50 free with Gray coming in at 20.80 and Kim taking second with a time of 21.01.

In men's 1-meter diving, Maryland claimed third and fourth place with junior Derek Hock (Aliquippa, Pa.) and freshman Patrick Meck (Rockville, Md.) scoring 269.25 and 227.65 points respectively.

The Terps closed out the weekend with a second-place swim in the 400 free relay. Kim, Gray, sophomore John Closs (New Providence, N.J.) and Ken Golaszewski swam a 3:28.92 in the event.

Maryland will return to action next weekend in Blacksburg, Va. The Terps will take on Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech on January 20th in an ACC tri-meet starting at 1:00 p.m.

The following seniors (on the men's side) were recognized this morning for Senior Weekend:

Andrew Doeck

Doeck had a successful showing at last year's ACC Championships. He had a 39th-place overall finish in the 100 fly at the 2006 ACCs (51.90) and set a career record in the 200 fly (1:56.22) at the conference meet, finishing 33rd. In 2005, he established his career best in the 50 free (21.91) at ACCs. Doeck came to Maryland from Boca Raton, Florida.

Danny Gray

Gray, a criminal justice major from Carlisle, Pennsylvania, swam his first season for Maryland last year after transferring from James Madison. He holds the school record in the 50 free (19.91) for his second-place swim in the event at last year's ACC Championships. Also at the 2006 ACCs, he placed fifth in the 100 free establishing a career-best time (44.38) and was a member of the third-place 400 free relay team, sixth-place 200 medley relay team and fourth-place 200 free relay team.

Tony Miller

Miller, a chemical engineering major from Severna Park, Maryland, has set career-best times in each ACC Championship in which he has taken part. At last season's ACCs, he took 12th in the 200 IM, 14th in the 400 IM and 10th in the 200 breast. He established his current career-best times in the 200 IM (1:50.27), 400 IM (3:58.72) and 200 breast (2:02.18) at the 2006 ACCs. Miller was also a World Championship Trials qualifier in 2006.

Tim Shepard

Shepard had strong swims at last season's ACC Championships, placing 29th in the 200 IM, 17th in the 100 breast and 16th in the 200 breast. At 2006 ACCs he established career-best times in the 200 IM (1:54.33) and 100 breast (57.59). He set a career best in the 200 breast at 2005 ACCs (2:02.94). He also won the 200 breast at the 2004 Terrapin Cup Invitational. Shepard is an accounting major from Catonsville, Maryland.
