Terps Drop Meet Against Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech

The Maryland men's swimming and diving team traveled to Blacksburg, Va. on Saturday for a double-dual meet against Atlantic Coast Conference rivals Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech. The Terrapins dropped the away meet to Virginia Tech (190-48) and Georgia Tech (186-52) bringing the men's overall season record to 2-7 and the men's conference record to 0-4 for this season.

The Terps opened the day with a season-best time in the 400-yard medley relay (3:27.15) by sophomore Dong Kim (Bucks Co. Pa.), senior Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.), freshman Aleksandar Damjanic (Zagreb, Croatia) and senior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.) good for a fourth-place finish.

Junior Eric Thomasson (Severna Park, Md.) was the top finisher for the Terps in the 200 freestyle (1:46.41) finishing in sixth place with freshman Chris Rouchard (Westlake, Ohio) coming in right behind in seventh (1:47.45). Thomasson went on to finish sixth in the 200 backstroke (1:56.93).

Gray led Maryland with a second-place swim in the 50 free (20.87) while Kim swam his season-best time of 46.09 in the 100 free for a fifth-place finish. In the 500 free, Rouchard led the Terps with a 4:54.54, good for ninth.

Shepard swam a 2:00.33 in the 200 individual medley, good for an eighth-place finish and led Maryland with a third-place swim in the 200 breaststroke (2:09.30). Damjanic had a seventh-place swim in the 200 butterfly (1:58.46).

In the three-meter diving competition, Maryland took fourth and sixth place with junior Derek Hock (Aliquippa, Pa.) and freshman Patrick Meck (Rockville, Md.) scoring 253.60 points and 234.15 points respectively. Hock went on to place sixth in one-meter diving with 251.20 points.

Maryland closed out the meet with a third-place swim in the 400 free relay (3:10.70). Gray, Kim, freshman Ryan Greene (Minnetonka, Minn.) and sophomore John Closs (New Providence, N.J.) swam the event.

The Terps will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. next weekend for more conference action. Maryland will compete in a dual meet against UNC on Saturday, January 27th starting at 11:00 a.m. Three weeks after this dual, Maryland will return to the same site for the ACC Men's Championships starting February 21st.
