The Terrapins started strong with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay by sophomore Dong Kim (Bucks Co., Pa.), sophomore Eric Cullen (Severn, Md.), freshman Aleksandar Damjanic (Zagreb, Croatia) and senior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.). The relay team swam a season-best time of 1:32.49.
Maryland swept the top-three places in the 50 freestyle. Gray took first (20.60), Kim finished second (20.91) and freshman Ryan Greene (Minnetonka, Minn.) placed third (21.74). All three swimmers established new season-best times in the event.
Maryland took second and third place in the 100 free with sophomore John Closs (New Providence, N.J.) and Junior Eric Thomasson (Severna Park, Md.) swimming a 48.14 and a 48.93 respectively.
Junior Ken Golaszewski (Boulder, Colo.) finished fourth in the 500 free (4:47.56) and swam a season best in the 1000 freestyle (9:50.83) for third place. In the 200 free freshman Chris Rouchard (Westlake, Ohio) led the Terps with a 1:46.19, good for a fourth-place finish.
Damjanic finished fifth in the 100 backstroke (59.94) while Kim was the top finisher for Maryland in the 200 back (1:53.66) in second place.
Cullen notched a season-best time and second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 58.12 while senior Tony Miller (Severna Park, Md.) swam a 2:17.28 in the 200 breast for fourth place.
Thomasson led the Terps in the 100 butterfly with a second-place swim (52.05) and the 200 fly with a third-place swim and season-best time of 1:55.53. Senior Tim Shepard swam to a third-place finish in the 400 individual medley (4:13.16).
Junior Derek Hock (Aliquippa, Pa.) finished third in 1-meter diving with 278.33 points. Hock went on to place fifth in 3-meter diving with 277.43 points.
To close out the morning, the squad of Kim, Gray, Closs and Greene won the 200 free relay with a season-best time of 1:23.42.
Maryland will see more ACC action this coming weekend; the Terps will travel to take on conference member, Virginia on Saturday, February 3rd starting at 1:00 p.m. Maryland will return to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the 2007 ACC Championships starting February 21st.
