Terps Continue Early Success

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland men's and women's swimming teams continue to build on their early success during the second day of the Black and Red Invitational.

Captain Emily Smoak placed sixth again in the second day of the invitational, competing in the 100-yard breaststroke. Smoak finished with a time of 1:08.47.

The second event of the day was the boys' 100-yard breaststroke. Andy Dilz placed second with a time of 58.59, while Eric Cullen came in third with a 58.86. John Closs rounded out the top five, finishing with a time of 1:00.47.

Annie Fittin swan for the girls in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 1:55.20. On the men's side, Kirk Jackson and Dong Kim both placed in the top five. Jackson finished with a time of 1:45.15 while Dong finished with a 1:45.46.

In the fifth event of the day, Jen Vogel swam for a first place finish. She finished with a 56.81 in the 100-yard butterfly. Patty DeScenza also swam in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing fifth with a time of 59.56.

The men also competed in the 100-yard butterfly, with two Terps finishing in the top five. Captain Eric Thomasson finished third wit ha time of 51.74 while Kyle Glennon rounded out the event, finishing wit ha 52.61.

In the final event of the day, Brian Honore competed for the Terps in the 500-yard freestyle. Honore finished with a time of 4:48.60.

The Terps will start their regular season on October 26 when they host Johns Hopkins University.
