Maryland Tied For Sixth After Day One Of ACCs

    COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Maryland men's swimming opened the 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships this evening with competition in the 800-yard freestyle relay and 200 medley relay. The Terrapins are tied with NC State in sixth place with 50 points after the first night of this year's ACCs. The standings are tight as there is a two-way tie for first (between Florida State and Virginia with 74 points) and a three-way tie for third (between North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Clemson with 60 points).

    In the first event of the evening, the Maryland squad of freshman Aleksandar Damjanic (Zagreb, Croatia), junior Ken Golaszewski (Boulder, Colo.), freshman Kevin Reardon (Voorhees, N.J.) and freshman Chris Rouchard (Westlake, Ohio) topped the team's season best in the 800 free relay with a time of 6:41.15. The Terps finished in seventh place for 24 points in the event. The relay team from Virginia took the first-place position with an NCAA B-cut time of 6:27.08 for a new ACC meet and a UNC pool record.

    Sophomore Dong Kim (Bucks Co., Pa.), sophomore Andy Dilz (Cincinnati, Ohio), Damjanic and senior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.) established a season-best time of 1:29.54 in the 200 medley relay. The squad finished sixth in the event to tally 26 points for the Terps. Florida State won the relay with an NCAA B-cut time of 1:27.71, breaking a UNC pool record.

    ACCs will continue tomorrow morning with prelims in the 500 free, 200 individual medley and 50 free starting at 11:00 a.m. Finals for these events plus the 200 free relay will begin at 7:00 p.m. Follow tomorrow's competition with live scoring linked to this release and to the Maryland men's swimming and diving schedule.
